Cooking 101

The shirt says, I WAS RAISED ON THE STREET. Because my little munchkin is one tough cookie.

I've started teaching Jack to cook, so he can win friends and influence people. Or, " score points with the babes" as he defines it. Whatever. I wanted everone to like his first dish, so we went with Swedish meatballs and pasta. Who doesn't like meat and balls mixed with carbs?

When it was time to cook the pasta, I had him fill a big pot with water and told him to add a dash of salt.

"Oh yeah, is that because salt is ionic and will affect the H-bonds between water molecules and make them weaker and make it easier for them to break apart into the gaseous state, so it boils faster?" says Mitch's son.

"Nooooo, it's because salt tastes good. Now shut up and cook." Okay, I didn't exactly tell him to shut up. But I wanted to.

Whatever the reason for salting the pasta water, Jack's first dinner was very tasty, and every bite was eaten. Because it was perfectly seasoned.

I thought the reason you salted the water was to increase its osmolality, which therefore increases the temperature at which it boils. Cooking your pasta a little hotter helps cook it a little faster.
